RIDE THE METRO BLUE LINE TO LONG BEACH
By Eye Spy LA Editor
10/10/2009

Driving to Long Beach on the southwestern edge of L.A. County is not always all that pleasant unless you live close by. Now you can go Metro (the Blue line) and get there hassle free. Once there you'll find a newly revitalized Long Beach beckons and the means to get to the many attractions there readily available. The sunny seaside climate, the Aquarium of the Pacific, Shoreline Village and other attractions such as the Queen Mary recommend a visit.

The Metro Blue Line connects Los Angeles to Long Beach. From the northwest area of L.A. County, take the Metro Orange to the Red to the Blue. From the San Gabriel Valley and East L.A. take the Gold Line to Union Station and pick up the Red to the Blue. The fare to completely cross the entire county and return, $5. No traffic or parking hassles, priceless. The Metro doesn't necessarily get you there faster, but it does get you there saner and riding the rails is part of the adventure.

The Blue Line drops passengers off at the Transit Mall on 1st and Pine where you'll find shopping and dining along Pine, the Long Beach Convention Center, Rainbow Harbor and Shoreline Village a short block away. You can also catch a number of buses and shuttles to other parts of Long Beach - Passport shuttles are free to many art and tourist attractions including the Queen Mary.

Visitors can also take a water bus/taxi both for transport to a destination and also just as a fun inexpensive way to get out on the water. A ride on the Aqua Bus is $1 or the Aqua Link (larger boat also goes to Alamitos Bay) is $3. Both run everyday during the summer and on weekends the rest of the year.

Another option is to take a harbor tour - it lasts about 45 minutes costs $10. Rainbow Harbor, Pine Street and the Pike all offer numerous dining and entertainment opportunities and all are within short walking distance from the transit hub.

The Queen Mary below as seen from Shoreline Village. Several tours are available, but the historic ship is loaded with exhibits you can explore for free. Long Beach is a great place to visit all year round.
