Last weekend we did a road trip for the day in Riverside. We started out at the California Citrus State Historic Park. The replica of a big orange fruit stand on the corner of Van Buren and Dufferin Avenue welcomes visitors to the park. It serves as a quaint and memorable structure of California's rich history. We entered the park viewing tall majestic palms and acres upon acres of citrus landscape.

The terrain is somewhat hilly with elevations ranging from 920 to 1,060 feet above sea level. Decomposed granite walkways - some routes betwen points are from 200 to 400 feet long. Don't forget to view Miss California and Iowa Boy statue. The orange coloring is a hoot. Park Hours: April-September 8AM-7PM, October-March 8AM-5PM and Visitor Center and Museum (open Wed., Sat. and Sun.) 10AM-4PM. Oh - one last thing - do not pick the fruit from the trees because it is prohibited.

We viewed the Sunkist Center, Orange Court and Gazebo, picnic areas and the Interpretive Gazebo Amphitheater. The citrus groves were totally amazing. We saw so many varieties of oranges, lemons, grapefruits, kumquats, and more. I believe the gals in the Visitor Center told us there were 75 varieties of citrus. They have a gift shop and I purchased a lemon scented emery board! Tours are offered at 10:00a.m. on Saturdays, and visitors may take self-guided tours. Next stop was to visit two fruit stands on the route. One of the fruit stands was located right in front of the park and the other one was down the avenue and visible from the road. The second one offered all sorts of nursery plants, pottery, handmade goodies, and outdoor lamps.

We had lunch at a Farmer Boys and made our last stop The Riverside National Cemetery. It was awesome to view the United States Medal of Honor Hall, the grounds were immaculate, the ducks and swans were quiet and added to the scenery, and the most moving of all was the Tribute to the MIA and POWs. So many USA flags flying all around the grounds. Seeing the names etched on walls made you stop and realize that they kept our country free. Saying a silent prayer meant a great deal to us and gave us an opportunity to remember those that served in the military to keep our country safe.

All in all we had a wonderful day.
