Even if you're not taking a train or riding the Metro Red or Gold Lines, Union Station is an historically and architecturally interesting building worth a visit. Union Station/Transit Gateway is the end (or beginning – depending on your point of view) of the Red Line. Catch a bus or a train or get on the Gold Line to Pasadena here. Across the street is El Pueblo De Los Angeles Historic Park. Chinatown and other historic districts are nearby. Built in the 1930s, the last of the grand railway stations, it incorporates Spanish and Art Deco architectural styles. The indoor waiting room still has the original chairs and they are in good condition. Floor to ceiling, this station is worth a closer look.
On the east side of the station is the newer Transit Gateway Center and home to the MTA. Art abounds in murals, sculpture and fountains and there are nice views of the city on this side.
Head across Alameda Street from Union Station to El Pueblo and Olvera Street. Historic buildings and museums, shopping and dining. Chinatown is just a few blocks away - go to the right on Alameda and then left on Ceasar Chavez and turn right on Broadway. Or catch a Dash bus to Chinatown on the Vigne Street side of the Union Station. Or the Gold Line to Chinatown and Pasadena is now open, just follow the signs in Union Station.
Dining in the area includes Mexican and Chinese of course. My favorite lunch stop - Philippes for a dip sandwich - is neither. This is a landmark eatery and is packed everyday (turn right up Alameda St. when exiting Union Station - located about a block away across the street). Get in line (it moves fast), order at the counter and then find a table. Last time I was there coffee was still 9 cents.

Go Metro - the Red Line subway or the Gold Line from Pasadena - exit west to Alameda Street or east to The Transit Gateway Center and buses. You can also arrive at Union Station via Amtrak and Metrolink trains.
By car (if you must - the Metro is much more fun) Just off the 101 and Harbor/Pasadena (I-110) freeways. Exit at Broadway on the 101 and go up to Main Street. The station is located on Alameda near Ceasar Chavez Avenue.
Public parking is available at the station and nearby. Rates range from $6 - $10 per day.
Both sides of the station have restroom facilities available. Just follow the signs.
