BAGELS, a nosh above other romances, has its world premiere this coming January in North Hollywood. The play begins the morning after Rachel, a senior, has spent the night at the home of Jake, also a senior. But just sleeping. So, Jake is slightly annoyed. Jake and Rachel just met through an Internet dating service, and Rachel harbors an embarrassing secret involving the Internet which she is reluctant to admit. The situation is complicated when Karen, a senior who had a prior liaison with Jake, unexpectedly shows up.
Art Shulman, who also is the Director, is a prolific playwright who has had four full length productions in the Los Angeles area in the past two years – “Misconceptions”, “Old Broads Can’t Dunk”, “The $4 Million Giveaway”, and, “The Rabbi and The Shiksa”.
Many of his plays have substantial roles for seniors, although BAGELS is his only play utilizing an all-senior cast.
His other full-length produced plays include “Joe Carbone’s Job,” “Boxcar & Eugenia,” “September 10,” “God, Bring Me A Miracle!,” “The Rabbi and The Gravedigger,” “Sex Is Good For You!” and the Christmas comedies, “The Trolls Who Stole The North Pole,” and “Spacenapped Santa”.
He is a professor in the Marketing Department in the Business School at California State University, Northridge.
The veteran cast consists of Diane Frank, Morry Schorr, Patrick Skelton, and LB Zimmerman.
“BAGELS” performs Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 PM, and Sundays at 2:00 PM, from January 29 through March 21 at the Secret Rose Theatre, 11246 Magnolia Boulevard, (1 ½ blocks west of Lankershim, No Ho Arts District).
