The Westwood Master Choir and Westwood Chamber Ensemble, under the direction of Maria Newman, presents “The Timeless Art of Chant”, featuring Arvo Pärt’s Magnificat and the Ave Maria of Josquin des Prez along with Faure’s Requiem on Sunday, March 26th, 2017, at 5:00pm. Vocal soloists: soprano Christina Borgioli, mezzo soprano Nandani Maria Sinha, tenor Larry Duplechan, tenor Scott Noonan, baritone Dimitri Smith, and bass baritone Matthew Lewis.
Following in an expanded and historical overview of the sacrifice of the Lenten season, the first two works speak to the lineage of Christ and focus on the mother of Christ. In the Magnificat the words of Mary are used as the litany: “My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit doth rejoice in God my Savior.” For the medieval setting of the Ave Maria, another Luke scripture is used to bless Mary with the words: “Hail Mary, full of grace.” Both works are sung a capella; the voices perform unaccompanied. "These ancient words resound across the centuries to find new meaning for us today,” said Newman. “Performing two works that are separated by hundreds of years brings modern sensitivities to the ‘Timeless Art of the Chant’”.
Music at Westwood embraces the traditional sacred music that speaks to the human soul and inspires the listener with harmonic beauty. Celebrating the sonic environment of our sanctuary, we invite the public to join us for these unique musical events. For more information, call 310.474.4535 or e-mail email@example.com.
