Revenge of Grrrls on Film comes to the LMU Westchester Campus Sept. 14 starting at 5 p.m., featuring Alice Bag, Vivien Goldman, Sandra Izsadore, Drew Arriola Sands as well as the U.S. premiere of Stories from the She Punks, and a rare screening of Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains.

“Identity is the crisis you can’t see,” the young woman self-named Poly Styrene sang in 1978. As the Somali-Scots-Irish vocalist of the punk band X Ray Spex, Poly foresaw the ruptures roiling beneath the surface of Thatcherite society, particularly the fissures of race and gender. Punk was the geyser that erupted from underground, and has for more than four decades carried the voices of artists struggling to express their identity – as outsiders, as outcasts, as dissidents, as
deviants, as grrrls, as chicas rockeras, as women.

Revenge of Grrrls on Film is a one-night event exploring the intersections and divergences of punk, gender, race, feminism, film, and music on the evening of September 14 at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Revenge will feature presentations by seminal punk figures from London, Los Angeles, and beyond, as well as a rare screening of the cult feature film Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains and the U.S. debut of a documentary on UK punk.

The centerpiece of the evening will be a panel focusing on topics raised in Vivien Goldman’s new book Revenge of the She-Punks. Panelists will include Goldman, who has been writing about music since the birth of punk in 1970s London; Fela Kuti collaborator Sandra Izsadore; LA punk legend Alice Bag; and queercore leader Drew Arriola Sands.

The panel will follow a screening of the documentary Stories from the She Punks, directed by Gina Birch and Helen McCookerybook, two musicians who, like Goldman, were founding members of the London punk scene. “So many girls and young women began to form or join bands … shyly entering music shops to buy a cheap instrument or being given a cast off by a male friend. It was a magic time, no money, no phones, no transport, but we had buses and call boxes and enthusiasm and we made something happen,” they write.

This closing event is a screening of Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains, the 1982 cult classic starring teenage Diane Lane, Laura Dern, and Marin Kanter, as they form an all-female punk band with no musical training. The film also features members of the Sex Pistols, the Clash, and the Tubes. Despite the film's commercial failure, the Stains found an audience on late-night cable television, and influenced a new generation of young feminist musicians and filmmakers.

Revenge of Grrrls on Film is a sequel to the groundbreaking Grrrls on Film festival at LMU in 2016.

It is sponsored by LMU’s Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts, School of Film and Television, College of Communication and Fine Arts, KXLU, and English/Journalism and History Departments.

The event is free but tickets must be reserved through Eventbrite.

Both events will take place in the Mayer Theater on LMU’s Westchester campus, 1 LMU Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90045.
