A requiem, defined as a mass for the dead, is not something most would generally expect to be a cheery undertaking. But when the 19th century composer and organist Gabriel Fauré was asked what motivated him to write his Requiem, his best known large work, Fauré replied, “My Requiem was composed for nothing…for fun, if I may be permitted to say so!”
On Sunday, March 21, audiences will have an opportunity to decide for themselves whether Fauré, the foremost French composer of his generation, succeeded in his goal to “escape from what is thought right and proper…” when the Hollywood Master Chorale presents Fauré’s Requiem: Remembrance and Rebirth at 7 p.m. at the Hollywood United Methodist Church in Hollywood.
“The Requiem is a deeply compelling and transformative work,” says Artistic Director and conductor Jeffrey Bernstein. “Its sheer beauty is irresistible, and in it Fauré explores a great range of emotion – from sorrow and lament to comfort and peace. At the end, Fauré presents a shockingly vivid depiction of Heaven itself and how grief is left behind there. This emotional journey is one reason Fauré's Requiem is a perennial favorite among lovers of choral music.”
“This Mass has been described as a ‘lullaby’ of death,” adds Board President Lyndia Lowy. “Fauré himself saw death as a happy deliverance rather than as something painful and sad. The Requiem seemed the perfect work for us to perform as a celebration of the re-birth of Spring, after a long Winter.”
Soloists joining the Hollywood Master Chorale include soprano Lauren Buckley and baritone Scott Graff. Organist Edward Murray will perform as well.
Preceding the Fauré Requiem are several short works that also explore the themes of death and transcendence, including Words to Be Spoken – a poem by Archibald MacLeish that was set to music by Ross Lee Finney in 1946.
“These a cappella pieces each treat the subject of mourning in its own way, preparing the audience for Fauré's redemption,” Bernstein explains.
For this performance, the Chorale has made a deliberate decision to slash ticket prices by 50%, from $20 to $10. “This reflects our heightened commitment to reaching out to the community and offering exceptional music at a very affordable cost,” says Lowy. “Times are tough for so many people right now. We didn’t want them to feel like they had to pass up an opportunity to hear a live performance of a magnificent work like Fauré’s Requiem because they couldn’t afford it.”
To purchase tickets, visit www.tix.com or the Hollywood Master Chorale’s website, www.hollywoodmasterchorale.org. The Hollywood United Methodist Church is located at 6817 Franklin Avenue in Hollywood, California. Founded in 1995, the Hollywood Master Chorale is a non-profit vocal organization comprised of men and women who share a passion for the art of choral music and a dedication to service in their community. The volunteer Chorale is known for its ability to perform a diverse repertoire, including Baroque, Classical and contemporary music.

The Chorale enjoys performing with guest musicians such as the Calabasas Baroque Orchestra, the California State University Long Beach Brass and Percussion Ensemble, the Mark Twain Ringers, the Ebell Chorale and the Hollywood Master Chorale Orchestra. Guests including Julia Migenes and soloists from the Los Angeles and San Francisco Opera Companies have also contributed to captivating Hollywood Master Chorale performances.
Of the HMC, David R. Sears of the Grammy Foundation wrote, “[The ensemble] is comfortable in multiple genres…They always provide their audience with an enjoyable experience. Their sheer joy of singing is a joy to behold.”
Community outreach is one of the cornerstones of the Hollywood Master Chorale. The HMC focuses on three areas of service: the disabled community, youth and arts education and cultural diversity.

The Concord Ensemble had the opportunity to perform with Sting, backing him up on his recent Los Angeles performances of music from his album of John Dowland lute songs, Songs from the Labrynth. Concord headlined the Berkeley Early Music Festival in June 2008, capping off a season which saw the mixed configuration of the ensemble perform Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Stimmung as part of the Jacaranda concert series in Santa Monica, which critic Alan Rich characterized as a “delightful hippie picnic.”
