Cliff Gilbert-Lurie, Senior Partner at Ziffren Brittenham LLP who is one of the premier transactional attorneys in the entertainment industry, will be honored as the Beverly Hills Bar Association’s (BHBA) 2018 Entertainment Lawyer of the Year by the BHBA’s Entertainment Law Section at its prestigious annual Awards Dinner on Thursday, May 3, 2018, at 5:30 p.m., at Montage Beverly Hills. Drew Carey will be the master of ceremonies for the event. Gilbert-Lurie‘s roster of A-list entertainment clients includes Academy Award-winning actress Sandra Bullock; Emmy-winning actress Claire Danes; multi-talented Emmy winning actor/writer/producer Tina Fey; Dick Wolf, one of the most successful producers in the history of television; Microsoft Corporation; Imagine Entertainment; and many other household names. The Entertainment Lawyer of the Year Award honors leaders in entertainment law for significant contributions to the profession. It has been presented annually since 1989 by the Beverly Hills Bar Association, which has the largest entertainment law section of any bar association in the world. The event benefits the BHBA’s education and community outreach programs.
“Cliff Gilbert-Lurie, a highly sought after legal standout, has a great depth of knowledge and expertise across a broad range of the entertainment law business from talent to technology,” says BHBA President Richard D. Kaplan. “He is widely acknowledged by his legal peers and clients as a superb and creative strategist.”
“I accepted this very gracious invitation to be honored by Beverly Hills Bar Association,” says Gilbert-Lurie, “because the dinner creates a moment to tell my clients, partners, friends in the entertainment business, and family, how much they all mean to me, and to thank them for their trust and confidence in me over the years. It has been their own achievements and successes, and their friendship and support, that has allowed me to enjoy my professional success.”
One of the country’s most sought-after entertainment attorneys and dealmakers, Gilbert-Lurie is a mentor, trusted advisor and friend to some of the most powerful people in Hollywood. He has a blue chip client base, excellent relationships with senior studio and network executives and is highly respected by virtually everyone with whom he does business. A senior partner and past co-managing partner at Ziffren Brittenham LLP, Gilbert-Lurie represents motion picture and television talent, creators of television series, media, digital, technology, software companies, investment funds and senior executives in the entertainment and media businesses. Gilbert-Lurie’s reputation as a strong but fair negotiator and a brilliant strategist has kept him on virtually all of the “Top Lawyers” lists. Media and legal publications, including The Hollywood Reporter and Variety, have profiled his deep knowledge of the entertainment and media businesses, sophisticated advice to clients, ability to evaluate and creatively resolve business issues, and his expert negotiation skills.
Gilbert-Lurie’s passion extends beyond his legal expertise, to countless hours spent on philanthropy. He and his wife, Leslie, have each chaired the Board of Directors of the Alliance for Children’s Rights, a legal rights organization that represents disenfranchised and foster youth in Los Angeles. As a civic leader, Gilbert-Lurie is a member of the Board of Directors of City National Bank, the Board of Governors of the Paley Center for Media, the Board of Advisors for the Peabody Awards, the Policy Circle of the RAND Corporation, and The Los Angeles Coalition for the Economy & Jobs. Gilbert-Lurie also has previously served on the boards of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation and the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. And he has chaired the Foreign Policy Roundtable, an organization that informs leaders in the entertainment industry on foreign policy issues. Previous accolades include the National Champion for Children Award from the Alliance for Children’s Rights and the Ira Yellin Community Service Award, presented by the American Jewish Committee. Gilbert-Lurie received his J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley (Boalt Hall) in 1979, where he was elected Order of the Coif and was Associate Editor of the California Law Review. He received an A.B. from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1976, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa and with Departmental Highest Honors.
