Galerie Michael (224 North Rodeo Drive Beverly Hills, CA. 20210) will present a highly anticipated exhibit by Marc Chagall which will show works on public display for the first time in history—and not seen by anyone in more than 40 years.
The Chagall exhibit will open on Saturday, September 15 through the end of October, at Two Rodeo Drive located on the famous cobblestone section in Beverly Hills.
Approximately 40 works will be on display and, unlike traditional museum exhibits, the rare pieces will be for sale.
As one of the most recognized modern masters in fine art, Chagall’s works project an expansive repertory of imagery from the whimsical scenes of Russian folk art to dreamlike worlds described in literature. Chagall’s use of color and form is distinctive—derived partly from Russian expressionists with strong influences from French cubism, suffused with exquisite, poetic inspiration.
Galerie Michael is privileged to present the following collection of Daphnis and Chloé works on paper. The gallery has acquired numerous, virtually unobtainable trial proofs, color proofs and bon à tirers directly from the publisher. These incredibly rare works are saturated with the rich colors of Chagall’s paintbrush, with countless hand annotations in pencil. Comprised of 42 color lithographs, these works transport the viewer not only into the heart of the story, but into the mind of Marc Chagall, accompanying him in the pursuit of a complete and satisfactory final work. Chagall’s enduring fascination with romantic narratives are typical of the vibrant, dream-like scenes for which he is most famous. Considered by many to be his most important graphic series, Daphnis and Chloé’s unrestricted use of color combined with romantic symbolism establishes this magnificent set of lithographs as a supreme artistic achievement by Chagall at the height of his powers.
Galerie Michael will host a lecture led by Chagall expert, Vivian R. Jacobson, on Saturday, September 15 opening at 3pm. While Jacobson talks, she will weave in the music of Elvis with the visual art of Chagall through a multi-media presentation.
