Superman: The Move
1978 / Warner Bros.
Largely regarded as the most influential superhero origin story to ever grace the silver screen, join us in celebrating the 40-year anniversary of Superman: The Movie.
With his planet doomed, Kryptonian scientist, Jor-El, sends his infant son to Earth. When his space ship crash lands in a field, farmers Jonathan & Martha Kent take young Clark in and raise him as their own. As he matures, Clark realizes that he has abilities unlike anyone else. Deciding to use his powers for the greater good of mankind, he moves to Metropolis where he not only becomes a reporter for the Daily Planet, but finds his calling in the persona of Superman. Clark’s challenges quickly mount in the form of natural disasters, fellow reporter Lois Lane, and criminal mastermind Lex Luthor, who is planning the greatest real estate heist in history, no matter the cost. In order to succeed Clark must truly embrace becoming the Man of Steel.
Christopher Reeve was a mostly unknown actor who was suggested for the titular role by casting director Lynn Stalmaster. The producers initially turned him down for being too skinny, but after blowing them away with his audition, Reeve got the part and underwent a bodybuilding program under David Prowse, who portrayed Darth Vader in the original Star Wars series.
Margot Kidder encompasses a vulnerable, yet resilient Lois Lane that is able to stand toe to toe with Reeve’s Man of Steel. Marlon Brando sets off the events that begin the adventure as Superman’s father, Jor-El. The diabolical plot and comedy relief are provided by Gene Hackman’s Lex Luthor. The film also features Jackie Cooper, Ned Beatty, Glenn Ford, Valerie Perrine, and Terrence Stamp.
Director Richard Donner creates the blueprint for introducing the protagonists in superhero films that would follow. Throw in a story by Godfather scribe Mario Puzo, an iconic score from composer John Williams, and Superman: The Movie becomes just as invincible as its hero
