From an historic first summit between US president Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, to multiple meetings between the leaders of North and South Korea, the Korean peninsula has been experiencing a period of unprecedented diplomacy. Yet progress appears to have slowed, or even stopped: North Korea is no longer moving as quickly toward denuclearization, and the US and South Korea have not removed any significant economic sanctions on the North.

What will 2019 bring for the US, North Korea, and the security issue? Is there still the possibility of “fire and fury” on the peninsula? Is there a real opportunity for easing of tensions, or is this simply another false start?

Join us on January 16th when Victor Cha and David Kang, two of the United States’ top Korea experts, debate what diplomatic approach should be taken and how optimistic the watching world should be about any potential outcomes.

Speakers:

Victor Cha joined the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C., in May 2009 as a senior adviser and the inaugural holder of the Korea Chair. He also holds the D.S. Song-KF Professorship in Government and International Affairs at Georgetown University. He left the White House in 2007 after serving since 2004 as Director for Asian Affairs at the National Security Council (NSC). Dr. Cha was also the deputy head of delegation for the United States at the Six-Party Talks in Beijing and received two Outstanding Service commendations during his tenure at the NSC. He is the author of five books, including the award-winning Alignment Despite Antagonism: The United States-Korea-Japan Security Triangle. Read more about Cha here.

David Kang is Maria Crutcher Professor of International Relations at the University of Southern California, and a professor of International Relations, Business, and East Asian Languages and Cultures, with appointments in both the School of International Relations and the Marshall School of Business. Kang is also director of the USC Korean Studies Institute. His latest book is American Grand Strategy and East Asian Security in the 21st Century. A regular consultant for U.S. government agencies and the military, Kang has also written opinion pieces in the New York Times, the Financial Times, the Washington Post, and the Los Angeles Times, and appears regularly in media such as CNN, PBC, the BBC, and NPR. Read more about Kang here.

Please reserve no later than 12:00 pm on Monday, January 14. Cancellations must be made by 12:00 pm on Monday, January 14 in order to receive a refund.
