Acclaimed actresses Jane Kaczmarek (“Malcolm in the Middle”) and Kate Burton (“Gray’s Anatomy”) star in a staged reading of the riveting drama Kindertransport by Diane Samuels presented by the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in conjunction with producers Patty Glaser, Paula Holt, Perla Karney and Karen Winnick on Sunday, November 11, 2018, 2 pm, in the Bram Goldsmith Theater at The Wallis. Directed by Deborah Lavine, the “moving, thought-provoking play,” (Variety) inspired by one of the lesser known but most moving stories of the Holocaust, explores the life of a child saved during the Kindertransport, the British humanitarian effort that rescued nearly 10,000 Jewish children prior to World War II. The performance celebrates the 80th Anniversary of the Kindertransport and a portion of proceeds will benefit the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust.
Samuels’ play, set in the attic of a suburban London home in the 1980s, delves into three generations of women whose lives were greatly impacted by events preceding World War II. Although fictional, the work is based on real-life accounts from those actually involved with the Kindertransport. At the same time as Nazi anti-Semitism was on the rise, thousands of German and Austrian Jewish children were transported to foster families in England. However, the psychological impact of their move effected the children long into adulthood. Intertwining fact and fiction, past and present, Kindertransport delves into the life of one survivor. It was premiered in London in 1993.
Kaczmarek reprises her role as Helga, which she previously played in the New York and Los Angeles productions of Kindertransport. Her other stage appearances include Caryl Churchill’s Ice Cream With Hot Fudge at the New York Shakespeare Festival, Steve Martin’s W.A.S.P at New York Stage and Film and Raised in Captivity at South Coast Rep. She has appeared in the motion pictures Falling in Love and John Grisham’s The Chamber, among others. The three-time Golden Globe and seven-time Emmy Award nominee’s television credits include “Party of Five,” “Picket Fences,” “Equal Justice” and “Law & Order.”
Burton, who plays Evelyn, has more than 100 stage, film and television credits to her name and has been nominated for three Tony and three Emmy awards. Her stage roles include the Broadway productions of Spring Awakening, Hedda Gable, Present Laughter and The Elephant Man. Her extensive list of television appearances includes “Scandal,” “This is Us,” “Madam Secretary,” “Extant,” “Law & Order,” “The Practice,” “The West Wing,” “Judging Amy,” “Empire Falls” and “Rescue Me.” Burton has also narrated numerous audio-books by such authors as Patricia Cornwell, Iris Johansen and Dean Koontz.
