Kentwood Players kicks off their incredible 70th season of community theatre in Los Angeles with THE GIVER.
Based on Lois Lowry’s acclaimed 1993 novel, the world of The Giver is a seeming utopia of sameness. It lacks color, memory, climate and terrain. The community exists without inequality, unemployment, injustice … or choice.
Designated birthmothers produce new children. Family units are assembled by direction of the elders led by the Chief Elder (Maria Brodeur). Each family unit is comprised of one mother, one father, one male child and one female child. Mother (Jenny Boone), Father (Shawn Plunkett), Jonas (Jack Heath / Elliott Plunkett alternating weekends) and Lily (Kaya McLean) are one such unit. At age 12, children are assigned their vocational roles in society and begin training for adult service.
When Jonas turns 12, he is selected for the special role of Receiver of Memories – the person who learns and keeps all the world’s memories from the time before sameness. From The Giver (Gavin Glynn), Jonas receives memories of violence, war, hunger and fear, but also of colors, joy, wonder and love. Their unique understanding of the truth will drive Jonas and The Giver to enact a plan that will change the community forever.
