[Spielberg] Mondo Cult Film Variety Showcase #6: Strange Brew, 112 min. This monthly screening series showcases the best new underground, surreal, crazy, experimental, absurd, rule-breaking and outlaw films from around the world. It's the 21st century and the definitions of "art" and "cinema" no longer have to be inaccessible or pretentious - Mondo Cult Film Variety Showcase makes a statement that art has no rules, film is art and anyone with talent is deserving of being celebrated even if they fail to conform to the rules of mainstream cinema. The theme for April is “Strange Brew” – a frothy mix of paranormal anomalies and science gone very, very wrong. This month's films include:
“Robot Ninja” trailer (2018, USA. Dir. J.R. Bookwalter) J.R. Bookwalter’s gonzo 1989 vigilante superhero flick is headed to theaters and Blu-ray in 2019 with a swanky new 2K restoration.
“Mega Time Squad” trailer (2019, New Zealand. Dir. Tim van Dammen) A low-level criminal steals an ancient Chinese time-travel device, but he may not survive the demonic consequences of tampering with time.
“Clickbait” trailer (2018, USA. Dirs. Sophia Cacciola and Michael J. Epstein) A college student who will do just about anything for Internet fame is kidnapped by a fan, and her reluctant roommate is the only one who can save her in this horror satire of popularity culture.
“Level 16” trailer (2019, Canada. Dir. Danishka Esterhazy) Teenagers Vivien and Sophia are locked away in a sterile top-secret facility where they're taught the finer points of "feminine virtues" by Miss Brixil, a Stepford-like headmistress.
“The Rage” (UK. 9 min. Dir. Joshua Cleave) This is not a drill.
“We Summoned A Demon” (USA. 6 min. Dir. Chris McInroy) They just wanted to be cool. Instead, they got a demon.
“Dark Hole” (USA. 5 min. Dir. Jaclyn Chessen) While spring cleaning, a young woman notices a hole in the wall that wasn't there before.
“Malacostraca” (USA. 16 min. Dir. Charles Pieper) A failing writer loses his grip on reality as his wife grows pregnant with their child.
“I Love My Robot Boyfriend!” (USA. 17 min. Dir. Sariah May) Plagued by the tantalizing and elusive idea of true love, Shelly, a teen queen science genius, sets out to create the perfect robot boyfriend.
“Obsidian” (USA. 8 min. Dir. Jessie Seitz) Against the backdrop of America's heartland, two friends suffer a terrible accident only to discover an even greater horror awaits them.
“Gardening at Night” (USA. 12 min. Dir. Shayna Connelly) The period between knowing death is near and death’s arrival forms an unbearable state of regret, sadness and anticipation for Samantha.
“The Transmission” (USA. 7 min. Dir. Brian Lonano) As a storm rages outside, Henry drinks his bottle of absinthe and receives a television transmission ... from his dead wife.
“Every Escape Imaginable” (UK. 16 min. Dir. Nick Butler) Stan has an unusual job - turning miserable city dwellers into any animal of their choice.
“Lobisome” (Spain. 11 min. Dir. Juan De Dios Garduño) Jorge and Iván receive a simple assignment: Steal a briefcase and deliver it to their client in the bathroom of an airport. What they did not imagine is that the briefcase contains a thousand-year curse. Discussion following with filmmakers in attendance.
