For the fourth consecutive year, Grand Central Market and The Oyster Gourmet will host oyster farmers from around the continent at the DTLA Oyster Festival on Saturday, October 13 and Sunday, October 14.
Meet the farmers, taste their half-shells, and learn about the distinctive “merroir,” or taste of place, that distinguishes oysters grown in different waters.
The farmers will be shucking both days from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the Market’s Hill Street platform adjacent to The Oyster Gourmet, which will offer a curated selection of French wines by the glass and by the bottle.
Around the Market, guests can indulge in specials such as Southern Fried Oysters at Horse Thief BBQ, Jazz Fest Oyster "Po Boy" Pizza topped with semolina crusted oysters, fresh heirloom tomatoes, shaved iceberg lettuce, crumbled Gorgonzola cheese and creole barbecue sauce drizzle at Olio, and B eer Battered Fried Oysters with house made tarter sauce and rouille at Prawn.
As part of the celebration, Louisiana-rooted, Los Angeles-based band, the Mudbug Brass Band will inspire festival-goers to dance and swing to the rhythms of traditional New Orleans Jazz, R&B, and Funk on Saturday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
On both days, kids can visit a free "shell-art" booth by Little Junebugs, where they can make their own projects using oyster shells, mini seashells and other underwater-themed decorations.
