Inspired by Leonard Bernstein’s dedication to making classical music accessible to all communities, hear a special arrangement of the West Side Story classic “Somewhere,” plus an uplifting symphonic and choral repertoire performed by the Harmony Project and the Urban Voices Project: A Skid Row Choir.
Conducted by Nick Alvarez, the Harmony Project orchestra showcases the talents of students from underserved areas in LA. The Urban Voices Project, under the direction of Leeav Sofer, brings the joy of music to disenfranchised and homeless communities throughout LA County.
After both musical groups perform “Somewhere,” the Harmony Project orchestra will perform arrangments of compositions by Richard Meyer, Tito Puente, and Robert Buckley, and the Carly Rae Jepsen song “Call Me Maybe.” Then the Urban Voices Project choir will take the stage to sing music by Jason Mraz and Kirk Franklin, plus “It’s Quiet Uptown” from the Lin-Manuel Miranda hit musical Hamilton.
A Q&A with the performers, moderated by Myka Miller (Executive Director of the Harmony Project), follows the performance.
