Grammy-nominated Brazilian valve-trombonist François de Lima leads a premier quartet of Brazilian musicians at Alva’s Showroom. The evening promises to be a breath-taking, joyful, and heart-pumping journey through samba, Jazz, Bossa Nova and MPB (“Música popular brasileira” or Brazilian Pop Music).
de Lima is one of the founders of Banda Mantiqueira and has earned worldwide acclaim for the swing in his interpretations and the creativity of his improvisations. Throughout the evening, de Lima and his fellow musicians will perform a unique blend of Brazilian ginga (swing) and American jazz including songs by Djavan, João Bosco, and Moacir Santos, some of which were recorded in de Lima’s Suingue Brasileiro.
François has toured all over the world with world-renown Brazilian artists including Djavan, Jorge Benjor, Ney Matogrosso, Flora Plurim and Gal Costa. With Gal Costa he performed at Carnegie Hall. Other leading musicians with whom he has played onstage include Paquito D'Rivera, Randy Brecker, George Benson, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, César Camargo Mariano, Roberto Carlos, Raul de Souza, Hermeto Pascoal, Paulo Moura, Wagner Tiso, Amilson Godoy, Nelson Ayres, Laércio de Freitas, Leny Andrade, Leila Pinheiro, Hermeto Pascoal, Flora Purim and Airto Moreira, Maestro Branco, and Dominguinhos.
In studio he has recorded on albums by artists including Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Ney Motogrosso, Julio Iglesias, Milton Nascimento and Guinga.
In 1992, de Lima and musicians, founded Banda Mantiqueira, a Brazilian big band and important voice on the Brazilian scene. The band’s album Aldeia was nominated for a 1997 Latin Grammy for “Best Latin Jazz Performance.”
