Antigone and her sister Ismene find themselves orphaned and utterly alone as the play begins. A civil war has just ended and Creon, their uncle, has ascended to the throne after the death of their father Oedipus, and the deaths of their brothers Eteocles and Polyneices. Creon, an autocrat who rules with an iron fist, honors Eteocles, but considers Polyneices a political rival, and so decrees that he should remain unburied on the battle field, to be devoured by worms and vultures. Antigone defies Creon and buries her brother, though it means she will surely be executed. She refuses to retract her defiance and unwittingly becomes the face of a movement, changing the lives of her sister Ismene, husband Haimon, and of her fellow citizens forever.
This adaptation takes its title from a letter written by Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Pussy Riot’s imprisoned front woman, and resonances between Creon and certain contemporary autocrats are clear. The production examines who we are when we stand up to tyrants and ask for the storm. Do we lose sight of our cause? Do we lose sight of each other? What does it mean to lead? The play also posits that in the heavy quiet inside the rage of tyranny, the tyrant himself may seek redemption.
Adapted by Matt Minnicino. Directed by Ovation Award winner Amanda McRaven. Presented by Fugitive Kind.
