Handel’s Messiah Performed at Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Downtown Los Angeles on Sunday, Dec. 9
The Cathedral Choir, the Dream Orchestra, Opera Chorus of Los Angeles,
Soloists Perform the Family Holiday Music Favorite
Imagine hearing Handel’s Messiah at Los Angeles’ beautiful Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels this holiday season.
Hallelujah – imagine no more! The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels will present Messiah on Sunday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m.
The Cathedral Choir under Music Director Joseph Bazyouros, The Dream Orchestra and Opera Choir of Los Angeles conducted by Music Director Daniel Suk, soprano Anna Schubert, mezzo Taylor Raven, tenor Nathan Granner and baritone Ben Lowe will join talents to present the holiday favorite.
The concert will include Handel’s “Royal Fireworks Overture” and “Eternal Source of Light Divine.”
Tickets are $10-$40 for the concert at the Cathedral, 555 W. Temple St., Los Angeles, CA 90012.
Dream Orchestra’s Daniel Suk credits Cathedral Choir Director Joseph Bazyouros with organizing the concert.
“He’s really the one who made this happen,” Suk said. “He saw this wonderful vision to perform Messiah in this one-of-a-kind venue in Los Angeles.”
Bazyouros became the Cathedral’s Director of Music in February 2018, following his work as Director of Music at the USC Caruso Catholic Center and parish positions at St. Frances of Rome Church in Azusa and St. Martin de Porres Church in Yorba Linda. He served on the Music Advisory Board for the Office for Worship for the Diocese of Orange and on the Diocesan Liturgical Commission. He serves on Liturgical Commission for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
“The choir has a great affinity for the Messiah. They have done the work before with guest conductors, but it has never been a part of our own concert program until this production,” Bazyouros said. “Many of them have commented that the Messiah was meant to be sung in places like the Cathedral, so they are delighted to be able to present it with the Dream Orchestra.”
Suk and the Dream Orchestra has performed Messiah at major Southern California venues each holiday season since he founded the professional, non-profit orchestra six years ago.
George Frederic Handel wrote the oratorio Messiah in 1741; it debuted in Dublin in April 1742, premiering in London a year later. Scriptural text was compiled by Charles Jennens from the King James Bible. With its joyous “Hallelujah” chorus, Messiah has become a hugely popular Christmas musical staple with many sing-along performances, even though it was originally a Lenten/Easter offering.
Anna Schubert is a soprano vocalist known for her coloratura skills, musical versatility, and dynamic stage presence. She performs actively as both a soloist and chorister in Southern California, primarily with the LA Master Chorale with which she made her Master Chorale debut as a soloist in Handel's Messiah in 2013 for their 50th anniversary season at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Schubert makes her LA Opera debut this month creating the role of Bibi in the world premiere of Ellen Reid's opera p r i s m, directed by James Darrah and conducted by Julian Wachner.
Mezzo-soprano Taylor Raven joined LA Opera's Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program during the 2017/18 season. She made her company debut as Vanderdendur in Candide. She enjoyed a summer as a 2018 Filene Artist with Wolf Trap Opera, where she performed as a soloist in Bernstein’s Songfest, Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, and The Best of Wagner’s Ring Concert with the National Symphony Orchestra. She was the first prize winner of the 2018 Loren L. Zachary Competition.
Tenor Nathan Granner is world renowned as a solo and collaborative artist. His buoyant, elegant personality and musicality shines from every stage. Stemming from his early breaks with the venerated Wolf Trap, Glimmerglass Operas and as a Metropolitan Opera National Competition winner, Granner’s career path is blessed with distinction and variety. His roles have included Nemorino in L'Elisir D'amore at Lyric Opera Kansas City; as Rodolfo in La Bohème with Tulsa Opera; premiering Doctor Morel in The Invention of Morel for Chicago Opera Theater.
Ben Lowe, baritone, received his Masters of Music at UCLA studying voice under Vladimir Chernov and opera with Peter Kazaras. Mr. Lowe is a graduate of Cal State Dominguez Hills where he received his BA in music. He has been a featured soloist in Redlands Bowl Festival and Celestial Opera Company. While at UCLA, Mr. Lowe performed in Poulenc’s Les Dialogues es Carmélites, Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld, Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea and Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortileges. He has been a featured soloist with the UCLA Philharmonic, performing Mozart’s C Minor Mass and Requiem.
