Saturday, April 20 – 7:30 PM LAUREL AND HARDY
Co-presented by Jeff Joseph/SabuCat, with special thanks to the UCLA Film and Television Archive:
Restored! SONS OF THE DESERT, 1933, 65 min. Dir. William A. Seiter. To attend a convention in Chicago of their fraternal organization, the Sons of the Desert, Stan and Ollie lie to their wives - but their cover story soon falls apart. Laurel and Hardy fans adopted the name of this feature for their organization, and many would cite it as the duo’s best; it was selected for preservation in the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry in 2012. Costarring Charley Chase. Program begins with the shorts:
Restored! “Brats” (1930, 21 min.) This hilarious short features Stan and Ollie in dual roles - as adults hoping to spend a quiet evening playing checkers, and as the mischievous kids who make that impossible. Shown with the original Vitaphone soundtrack!
Restored! "Helpmates" (1932, 20 min. Dir. James Parrott) Hungover Ollie asks Stan to help him clean up after a wild party before his wife returns; their housecleaning efforts fail in spectacular fashion. Introduction by Jeff Joseph. SONS OF THE DESERT restored by UCLA Film & Television Archive with funding provided by the George Lucas Family Foundation and The Film Foundation. “Brats” and “Helpmates” photochemically preserved and restored by the UCLA Film and Television Archive.
