Saturday, July 20 – 1:00 PM PRE-CODE HOLLYWOOD
Made between 1930, when the restrictive Production Code was adopted, and 1934, when it was in full effect, “pre-Code” films are beloved for their provocative content and rather risqué style. This six-part series introduces viewers to some of the most popular actresses of the pre-Code era through double features of their films - Barbara Stanwyck, Jean Harlow, Kay Francis, Carole Lombard, Marlene Dietrich, Joan Blondell and Joan Crawford.
Kay Francis Double Feature: GIRLS ABOUT TOWN, 1931, Universal, 80 min. Dir. George Cukor. With a lavish lifestyle untouched by the Depression, Kay Francis and Lilyan Tashman are New York party girls hired to escort businessmen Joel McCrea and Eugene Pallette, respectively. For the first couple, true romance could trump financial concerns - if a not-quite-divorced spouse cooperates. Cukor’s sure hand with the leads, cinematographer Ernest Haller’s nimble camerawork and a witty script by silent comedy star Raymond Griffith help make this pre-Code gem sparkle. With Louise Beavers.
JEWEL ROBBERY, 1932, Warner Bros., 68 min. Dir. William Dieterle. William Powell (THE THIN MAN films) stars as a debonair thief who steals both gems and hearts in this romantic crime comedy based on the play “Ékszerrablás a Váci-utcában” by Ladislas Fodor. Bored Baroness Teri von Horhenfels (Kay Francis) is on the prowl for a new lover when she witnesses a jewelry store robbery and decides the head of the gang (Powell) will be her next prey. She casts aside her current amour, but her husband (Henry Kolker) will not surrender so easily: He dedicates himself to putting The Robber behind bars. Preserved by the Library of Congress. Program begins with an illustrated presentation by historian Kimberly Truhler.
