Double Feature: SALÒ, OR THE 120 DAYS OF SODOM (SALÒ O LE CENTOVENTI GIORNATE DI SODOMA), 1975, Park Circus/MGM, 117 min. Dir. Pier Paolo Pasolini. Be prepared, SALÒ is not for the weak of heart. The polar opposite of the “Trilogy of Life,” SALÒ depicts with cold precision the sexual and psychological atrocities visited on 16 young men and women, held hostage by a group of depraved nobles at the end of WWII. Pasolini based the film on a notorious book by the Marquis de Sade but shifted the locale to the town of Salò, where Pasolini’s brother was killed during the war (and where the filmmaker was arrested by the Nazis). One of the most controversial and widely censored films ever made (it took more than 25 years for the uncut version to screen in England), SALÒ has lost none of its power to shock and disturb. With Paolo Bonacelli, Giorgio Cataldi, Umberto Quintavalle. In Italian with English subtitles.
PIGSTY (PORCILE), 1969, MovieTime, 98 min. Dir. Pier Paolo Pasolini. A bitter attack on fascism and oppressive social conventions in general, this final addition to Pasolini’s “Mythical Cycle” interweaves two surreal satires. In the first, a young man (Pierre Clémenti) wanders a beautiful volcanic landscape, gradually developing an insatiable appetite for human flesh. In the second, the bored son of a German industrialist (French star Jean-Pierre Léaud) ignores his family and fiancée (Anne Wiazemsky), preferring to spend his endless free time among pigs in the sty. In Italian with English subtitles. Note: Due to the graphic nature of these films, no one under 18 will be admitted.
NOTE: It is always a good idea to verify date, time, location and other information prior to going.
