Barry and I visited the De Luz Farms and Nursery this past Saturday. It is an organic farm in the De Luz area of Temecula. They have approximately 12 acres of grapefruit, guavas, avocados, oranges and more. They also have a 5,800 sq. ft. computer controlled greenhouse where Gary and Melodee Leavitt grow organic, starter transplants.
They are committed to sustainable farming and they grow aquaponically in their greenhouse.
The De Luz Farms and Nursery are part of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). People from the community directly support the CSA farm by purchasing, in advance, a portion of the farm's annual harvest. Local, seasonal, fresh, organic produce is delivered weekly to a site within the community for pickup.
Their crops vary depending on the month of the year. Here is a sampling: apples, beets, feijoas, garlic, grapefruit, kumquats, leeks, melons, onions, peppers, potatoes, pomegranates, spinach, swiss chard, tangerines, watermelons and zucchini. Herbs are plentiful and here is another sampling: basil, cilantro, dill, marjoram, mexican mint, marigold, oregano, parsley, rosemary, sage, spearmint, and thyme.
Farm visits are welcomed and please contact the owners if you are interested. Gary and Melodee answer any and all questions and, believe me, there were plenty.
A wonderful visit for adults and children. It was a learning experience and the word to remember is "FREE."
NOTE: It is always a good idea to verify date, time, location and other information prior to going.
