The reserve is located at the southern end of the Santa Ana Mountains.
I took a three mile hike this morning with my husband, Barry. The large areas of chaparral were amazing. The chamise, scrub oak and ceonothus were picture perfect. We saw two types of lizards on huge rocks. We witnessed ground squirrels in the area of the old adobe houses, and various wildflowers. The California poppies were scattered throughout the reserve. We were hoping to see treefrogs and pond turtles, but the creekbeds were too dry .
The acres of rolling grasslands is widely regarded as the finest remaining bunchgrass prairie in the state of California. Be very careful of the prickly pear cactus!
We had to be careful to stay on the trails to avoid poison oak. There were signs posted that read "Leaves of three, let it be."
The Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve is a cooperative management project of the Nature Conservancy, the Riverside County Regional Park and Open-Space District, the California Department of Fish and Game, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.
There are guided tours, led by trained docents by advanced arrangement.
Don't forget to stop by the Visitor's Center and ask for Clarence. Tell him Mary Sue and Barry sent you.
