March Field Air Museum is proud to welcome Steve Snyder, author of the award-winning book “Shot Down,” as a guest presenter at the next Inland Empire Aviation Roundtable scheduled for Wednesday evening, March 21, 2018, beginning at 7 p.m. In addition, the Roundtable event will include the opportunity to see the Museum’s own beautifully restored B-17G “Starduster.” Free and open to the public, the Inland Empire Aviation Roundtable is proudly sponsored by March Field Air Museum.
As background, “Shot Down”– which has been recognized with 25 prestigious national awards – recounts the dramatic experiences of the courageous 10 crew members after their B-17 bomber (piloted by Snyder’s father) was knocked out of the sky by German fighters over the French/Belgian border. The book also highlights the courageous Belgian people who risked their lives to help the crew.
After four years of dedicated research on the topic, Snyder’s presentation will be focused on the dramatic WWII experience when the bomber was shot down, how Snyder’s father was hidden by the Belgian underground, and how he fought with the French Resistance. The presentation will also cover pilot training, the B-17 Flying Fortress, what it was like to fly combat missions, and will end with a tribute to WWII veterans.
A graduate of UCLA, Steve Snyder lives in Seal Beach, California. In 2009, he retired following a 36-year career in sales and sales management. A member of numerous WWII organizations, Snyder is past president of the 306th Bomb Group Historical Association.
