March Field Air Museum is proud to launch an interactive and new program for guests titled “Up-Close Aircraft Days.” Beginning on Saturday, January 13, 2018, and continuing every second Saturday, a different aircraft will be featured each month. Guests will have the opportunity for a close look – sometimes climbing stairs to get a close-up view into the cargo bay or cockpit, other times even climbing aboard. The new “Up-Close Aircraft Days” will take place every second Saturday at the museum, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., throughout 2018.

The very first “Up-Close Aircraft Day” is scheduled for Saturday, January 13. The featured aircraft this day will be the Douglas C-54 Skymaster, a four-engine transport aircraft used by the U.S. militaryinWorld War IIandthe Korean War. Derived from pre-war plans for a civilian airliner (theDouglas DC-4), the C-54’s primary role was the transport of cargo. However C-54s also served as VIP transports, carrying presidents, prime ministers, and high-ranking military officers. During theBerlin Airlift,Skymasters hauled coal and food toWest Berlin, successfully defeating a Soviet blockade. The museum’s C-54 has its own unique history, being delivered to the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1945 then transferred to the U.S. Navy (where it was redesignated an R5D). Our C-54 spent most of its career as a U.S. Marine Corps transport based at various installations, including San Diego and El Toro, ending its active service as a civilian water-dropping, firefighting aircraft based at nearby Hemet-Ryan airport.
