Establishing Connections to a Teen's Inner World:

Using the Breath to Heal and Build

In the body’s hierarchy of needs, breath is #1. The way that we breathe directly affects our emotional state and vice versa. This experiential session will explore how to use the breath to heal the connection between the outer world and the inner, and how therapists and clinicians can incorporate simple breathing techniques into their teen and young adult client's treatment.

9:45 - 10:45 AM

Tim Ringgold, MT-BC

The Power of Music in Teen Mental Health

This session will explore the goals of music therapy when working with teens, the benefits and power of interacting with music in the mental health setting, and how client-centered music experience differs from the prescriptive music experience.

Participants will learn guiding principles for nourishment, food, the kitchen, hospitality, and the meal. Discussion of the meal plan used at Newport Academy will demonstrate the connection of proper nutrition and healing.

Healing Relational Trauma: The Path to Sustainable Healing

This presentation incorporates attachment-based therapies to identify how attachment ruptures from early childhood often interfere with achieving health, happiness, and emotional well-being - particularly for those with mental health and addiction issues. Relational trauma forms disempowering core beliefs which define the sense of self, resulting in life-long emotional and relational patterns. Healing relational trauma minimizes triggers and reduces emotional dysregulation in the present. Gaining self-awareness of what often is deeply rooted and unconscious, frees us from the past and the need to act out in self-defeating behaviors. This presentation not only assists clinicians in their therapeutic process with individuals and families, but is critical for treatment providers to understand the impact in their own lives.

2:15 PM - 3:15 PM

Kristin Wilson, MA, LPC

Creativity and the Adolescent Brain: An Experiential Workshop Using Creativity

to Foster Authentic Connections

We will explore new research on the adolescent brain, the development of the prefrontal cortex and the importance of increasing creative expression during adolescence. We will look at the role school based services can have on facilitating classroom cultures and relationships that promote creativity and thus support an adolescent’s “job” of finding their identity, establishing their beliefs and questioning authority.

3:15 PM - 4:15 PM

Elizabeth Jorgensen, CADC

How to Engage Highly Resistant Adolescents into the Process of Treatment

Explore how Motivational Interviewing techniques, in conjunction
with Self-Medication Theory, can facilitate a more effective therapeutic relationship with teens.

4:15 PM - 4:45 PM

Q&A with today's speakers

Moderated question and answer session with today's speakers.

4:45 PM - 5:00 PM
