AWARD DINNER AND RECEPTION: MAJOR GENERAL(Retired) JOHN HARREL RECEIVES THE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA’S PRESTIGIOUS DISTINGUISHED EAGLE SCOUT AWARD
The Boy Scouts of America, Western Los Angeles County Council, Balboa Oaks District will be honoring retired, Major General John Harrel with the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award for his tireless service and devotion to his Country. During his illustrious service in the United States Army, he distinguished himself as an exceptional leader, and never failed to uphold the Scout Oath and Scout Law, keeping his commitment to fulfill the level of excellence expected from an Eagle Scout.
A reception will precede the no host dinner at the American Legion, Hollywood Post 43, at 5:30 pm. The dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. The dinner is open to the public, as well as Boy Scouts and their families, and will accommodate up to 300 attendees.
Saturday, April 1, 2017. Reception at 5:30pm, no host dinner at 6pm.

Major General John S. Harrel
Major General Harrel has continued to be an active volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America, and is currently Unit Commissioner (Balboa Oaks District) Troop 92. Additionally, he serves as a committee member to Troop 333 North Star District (Greater Los Angeles Council), and as Council Board Member At Large on Maui County Council.
MG(Ret.) John S. Harrel's active military service began in June of 1975 after receiving his commission as a second lieutenant through the United States Marine Corps Platoon Leaders’ Course. He attended The Basic School, (Marine Infantry Officer Basic Course) from June to December 1975. His first assignment was Rifle Platoon Commander in Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines, at Camp LeJune, North Carolina. He progressed through a variety of assignments, and completed his service in the USMC as a Company Commander at Marine Barracks, Naval Air Station Alameda.
MG(Ret.) Harrel transferred to the California Army National Guard in 1980. His first assignment was Intelligence Officer, 1st Brigade, 40th Infantry Division. He held positions of increased responsibility with commands including: Combat Support Company, 1-160th Infantry; Echo Company, 1-160th Infantry; Task Force 1-185 Armor (1992) Los Angeles Riots; 1st Battalion,185th Armor; 3rd Battalion
185th Armor; 2nd Battalion, 160th Infantry; Second Brigade 40th Infantry Division.
MG(Ret.) Harrel commanded the Nation’s Peace Keeping Mission; Muiti- National Brigade East, Kosovo Force and Army Force Kosovo, Macedonia and
Albania; thereafter serving as Commander 40th Infantry Division and Commander California Army National Guard.
MG(Ret.) Harrel's awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit (3 Oak Leaf Clusters); Meritorious Service Medal (4 Oak Leaf Clusters) and the Army Commendation Medal (2 Oak Leaf Clusters); the Kosovo Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Medal; The Order of California and the Ukraine Order of
Merit (2nd Award).
MG (Ret.) Harrel completed the United States Army War College Fellowship at Ohio State University and holds a Juris Doctorate Degree from Southwestern University and a Bachelor and Masters of Arts degree in History from California State University, Northridge. He has published a number of historical articles with his book, The Nisibis War, The Roman Defense the East AD337-363, released in February 2016.
MG(Ret.) Harrel retired as a Deputy Attorney General IV after 28 years with the California State Department of Justice, Office of the Attorney General.
BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA’S DISTINGUISHED EAGLE AWARD BACKGROUND:
The Distinguished Eagle Scout Award was established in 1969 to acknowledge Eagle Scouts who have received extraordinary national-level recognition, fame, or eminence within their field and who have shared their talents with their com- munities on a voluntary basis.
Only Eagle Scouts who earned the Eagle Scout rank at least 25 years previously are eligible for nomination. The award is given by the National Eagle Scout Asso- ciation upon the recommendation of a committee of Distinguished Eagle Scouts.
The National Eagle Scout Association Committee, under the direction of Alumni Relations, located at the Boy Scouts of America’s National Headquarters, selects the recipients of this award. The members of the Selection Committee are all re- cipients of the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award.
